DAY 19 | 08.22

And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.

1 JOHN 5:14-15

We each have things in our lives that we ask God for. It’s not wrong to ask for God to work on our behalf, in fact He actually desires us to do so. But sometimes the prayers we pray aren’t always in alignment with what God desires for us. Sometimes our own desires get in the way of what God actually wants to do in our lives. God can answer us in three different ways: Yes, no, and not now. If God answered all of our prayers with a “yes” the whole world would be in a heap of trouble. Sometimes the prayers that God tells us “no” or “not yet” are the most significant moments of our faith journey. It allows us to surrender our desires and trust that whatever God has for us is best.

Discussion Questions

•  Is there something you have been asking God for that you haven’t truly surrendered to Him?

• Surrendering our will for God’s will can be an incredibly difficult thing. In what area of your life do you need more faith to trust and believe that God is capable of meeting all of your needs?

• Do you trust that God’s will is better than yours even in the unknown?

Prayer Focus

In our most difficult moments it can be so challenging to surrender to what God desires for us. But in those moments we must take the same posture of Jesus and say, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will” (Mark 14:36). Even in the midst of what you might be facing today, there is so much freedom in surrendering our own will for His. It brings peace in the midst of chaos and joy in the midst of suffering. Take heart knowing that even if you don’t get what you want, God has something much greater for you. Because what He has for you is always more than enough.

Next Steps

Surrendering our own desires is not an easy thing to do. But it’s not only something that brings freedom, it’s something that God asks of us. Surrender may look like an act of weakness to others, but it is actually the most bold and powerful thing we can do. Because when we ask our Creator to do what He desires rather than what we desire, it gives Him permission to move in ways much bigger than we could even imagine. Take the step to trust Him today. It is always worth it.
